Benares gharana (vocal)
The vocal tradition of Benares, especially its thumri.
What the name refers to
The Benares vocal gharana is the singing tradition of Varanasi: khayal, but above all thumri and the seasonal and semi-classical forms that surround it. It is a separate tradition from the Benares tabla gharana, which shares the city's name but is a percussion lineage with its own descent.
How it grew
The tradition took shape in the city's temple and salon music-making and was carried into the twentieth-century concert and recording era by singers including Rasoolan Bai, Siddheshwari Devi and, later, Girija Devi. Much of its early history survives through performance memory and recordings rather than written record, and dates for its nineteenth-century figures are often uncertain; where accounts disagree this page keeps the disagreement visible rather than choosing one version.
What it sounds like
Benares singing is text-led: the melody follows the meaning and colour of the poetry. Its best-known vehicle is thumri, a genre whose lyrics, usually in Awadhi, Bhojpuri or Braj Bhasha, treat romantic love with devotional undertones, and which permits the singer to move outside the strict grammar of a raga to serve the words. Thumri favours ragas that allow this freedom — Kafi, Khamaj, Jogiya, Bhairavi, Pilu and Pahadi — and lilting talas such as Deepchandi, Addha and Punjabi. Alongside thumri the gharana carries the local seasonal forms kajri, chaiti, hori and dadra. Its tappa, a fast and highly ornamented form whose Punjabi-language compositions are attributed to Shori Miyan and shared with Gwalior, is elaborated differently in the Banaras gayaki, and its singers have tended to set it in the sixteen-beat Sitarkhani or Addha tala.
