Biography

Life

Ajay Shankar Prasanna was born in Allahabad in 1969 into a family of classical musicians associated with the Banaras gharana of wind players. He learned the bansuri from his father, Pandit Bholanath Prasanna, and made his public debut at the age of six at the Akhil Bharatiya Sangeet Sammelan.

His playing is described as drawing on both the gaayaki (vocal) and tantrakaari (instrumental) approaches to the flute, carrying the family style into concert and studio work alike. He has performed in India and abroad, including at the Queen Elizabeth Hall in London, and is a top-grade artist of All India Radio.

Recognitions recorded for him include a Global Indian Music Award for the album Cinema, the Sangeet Ratna Award of the Swami Haridas Samiti in Vrindavan, the Surmani Award of Sur Singar Sansad in Mumbai, and the Bharat Gaurav Samman.
