Biography

Life

Arati Ankalikar Tikekar was born on 27 January 1963 in Bijapur, Karnataka, and is based in Mumbai. She sings in the Agra, Gwalior and Jaipur-Atrauli styles of Hindustani classical music.

Her early musical education came from Vasantrao Kulkarni of the Agra-Gwalior gharana. This was followed by training under Kishori Amonkar of the Jaipur-Atrauli gharana, and thereafter further training from Dinkar Kaikini.

Alongside the concert platform she has sung playback for Marathi, Konkani and Hindi films, among them Shyam Benegal's Sardari Begum (1996), Antarnaad, De Dhakka and Samhita. She received the National Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer for Antarnaad (2006) and again for Samhita (2013), and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Hindustani vocal music for 2020. She is known for the albums Tejomay Nadbrahm and Raag-Rang, and has performed internationally, including at the Aga Khan Museum in Toronto in 2019.
