Biography

Life

Devaki Pandit was born on 6 March 1965 in Maharashtra, into a household of performers; her maternal grandmother Mangala Ranade and her sisters were musicians from Goa. Her first teacher was her mother, Usha Pandit, herself a disciple of Jitendra Abhisheki.

She began formal training at the age of nine with Vasantrao Kulkarni, and went on to learn from Kishori Amonkar and Jitendra Abhisheki, with further guidance from Babanrao Haldankar of the Agra gharana and from Arun Dravid. She was recording professionally by the age of twelve.

Alongside khayal she is known for bhajan and abhang, and has sung the Ram Raksha Stotra in thirty-two ragas. In film, television and concert work she has collaborated with Hridaynath Mangeshkar, Rais Khan, Gulzar, Vishal Bhardwaj, Naushad, Jaidev, Jatin–Lalit and Zakir Hussain. She won the Maharashtra State Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer four times, in 1985, 2001, 2006 and 2011, and received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2022.
