Biography
Life
Fazal Qureshi was born in Mumbai on 13 February 1961 to the tabla player Ustad Alla Rakha, and began learning tabla from his father in his mid teens. With Alla Rakha's schedule crowded by performance, he and his brother Taufiq drew heavily on their eldest brother Zakir Hussain for much of their tabla technique.
Alongside Hindustani concert work he has played extensively with jazz and world musicians, and for many years has been part of Mynta, a world-music band based in Sweden with several albums to its name. He also plays the kanjira.
He teaches at the Ustad Alla Rakha Institute of Music near Shivaji Park in Dadar, Mumbai, which his father founded in 1985 and which Fazal Qureshi now runs.
