Biography

Life

Sanjeev Abhyankar was born in Pune on 5 October 1969 to Shobha Abhyankar, a musicologist and teacher of the Mewati gharana, who gave him his first training from the age of eight. He went on to study with Pandit Gangadharbua Pimpalkhare of the Gwalior gharana, and later with Pandit Jasraj in the Mewati tradition.

He gave his first stage performance in Mumbai in 1981, at the age of eleven, and has since recorded more than sixty solo albums and performed in over two hundred cities. Alongside concert khayal he sings abhanga, bhajan and Sanskrit devotional compositions, and has worked as a playback singer in Hindi and Marathi films.
