Biography

Life

Shruti Sadolikar Katkar was born on 9 November 1951. She was initiated into music by her father, Wamanrao Sadolikar, himself a disciple of Vishnu Digambar Paluskar and of Alladiya Khan, the founder of the Jaipur-Atrauli gharana, and of Alladiya Khan's son Bhurji Khan.

She trained for twelve years under Gulubhai Jasdanwala, known for his repository of rare compositions and complex ragas of the Jaipur-Atrauli gharana, and continued to learn from Bhurji Khan's son Azizuddin Khan until his death in August 2011.

A graduate of Mumbai University, she received the Sangeet Visharad from the Akhila Bharatiya Gandharva Mahavidyalaya Mandal with distinction and a Master's degree in music from SNDT Women's University, Mumbai, winning the Bhaskarbua Bakhale Prize. She has held the Kesarbai Kerkar Scholarship at the National Centre for the Performing Arts (1976–78) and the Homi Bhabha Fellowship (1994–96).

She has taught as a guru at the ITC Sangeet Research Academy, Kolkata, as a professor in the Department of Music at the University of Mumbai and as a visiting professor at SNDT Women's University and the Rotterdam Conservatorium, and served as Vice Chancellor of the Bhatkhande Music Institute Deemed University, Lucknow. Alongside concert work she has produced research-based thematic programmes, contributed articles to journals on Indian classical music, and revived the musical play Sangeet Tulsidas, in which her father had played the protagonist in 1930.
