Biography
Life
Badruddin Khan, known as Manji because he was the middle of Alladiya Khan's three sons, was born at Uniara in about 1888. With his elder brother Nasiruddin "Badeji" Khan and his younger brother Shamsuddin "Bhurji" Khan both in poor health, he was treated by his father as the foremost inheritor and disciple of the Jaipur-Atrauli gayaki.
He admired the Gwalior singer Rahimat Khan, and traces of that style in the family's singing drew his father's anger; he gave up singing for a time and resumed it on his father's terms. He was noted for a composed presence on stage and for placing lighter pieces beside the serious classical fare, which made him popular with younger listeners. His career was cut short by his death in Bombay on 27 July 1937.
Musical contribution
What they brought to music
The critic Mohan Nadkarni described him as something of a rebel who widened the horizons of his gharana without compromising its fundamentals, lending it a romanticism comparable to what Abdul Karim Khan brought to Kirana and Faiyaz Khan to Agra, while keeping the discipline of his father's music.
