Biography

Life

Chetan Joshi was born in Jharia, in the Dhanbad district of what is now Jharkhand, and grew up in Noamundi and Bokaro Steel City. His father, Bhupendra Joshi, was a tea trader. He studied in Bokaro and Prayagraj.

His training on the flute was not confined to a single household: he learned from Acharya Jagadish in Bokaro, from Pandit Bholanath Prasanna in Allahabad, from Pandit Raghunath Seth in Mumbai, and from Pandit Ajoy Chakrabarty in Kolkata.

He began teaching music in schools in 1987 and taught at Delhi Public School from 1988 to 2012, performing widely through those years and afterwards. He has played jugalbandi concerts with santoor, violin, guitar, sitar and sarod players, and appeared at the Rasrang World Flute Festival in New Delhi in 2016 alongside other leading flautists. Among his recognitions are a state cultural honour from the Government of Jharkhand and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for 2019.
