Biography

Life

Ishaan Ghosh was born on 20 May 2000, the son and disciple of Pandit Nayan Ghosh, who plays both tabla and sitar. He is the grandson of Padma Bhushan Pandit Nikhil Ghosh and the grand-nephew of the flautist Pandit Pannalal Ghosh, which places him in the Farrukhabad line his grandfather taught from at Sangit Mahabharati in Mumbai. His own account and his father's both say he gave his first tabla solo at about two and a half.

His training was not confined to tabla: he studied voice, sitar and theory alongside it, and describes growing up on family stories about Ustad Ahmed Jan Thirakwa, from whom his father received guidance as a boy.

He performs both as a soloist and as an accompanist, and has played with Pandit Jasraj, Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, Pandit Buddhadev Dasgupta, Ustad Aashish Khan, Ustad Nishat Khan, Pandit Tejendra Narayan Majumdar, Dr. N. Rajam, Pandit Ajoy Chakraborty, Kaushiki Chakraborty, Rakesh Chaurasia, Niladri Kumar, Taufiq Qureshi and Purbayan Chatterjee, besides his father. He conceived ARAJ, an ensemble of young Hindustani musicians with his father as musical mentor, and has released cross-genre work including the techno-tabla single Euphoria with producer Nakul Chugh.

Recognition so far includes the Baba Allauddin Khan Yuva Puraskar from the Government of Madhya Pradesh (2012), an Achievement Award presented by former US President Jimmy Carter (2016), a Rising Star Award (2019) and the Kalashree Samman from the Government of Maharashtra (2020).

Musical contribution

What they brought to music

The repertoire he plays is his family's: Farrukhabad compositions as taught by Nikhil Ghosh and passed on by Nayan Ghosh, whose own playing draws on Delhi, Ajrada and Lucknow material as well. In solo his recitals move through the standard sequence but are built around long, densely figured compositions rather than speed alone. In accompaniment he is noted for staying under the soloist and answering phrases rather than filling. His fusion work keeps the tabla in the foreground of the arrangement rather than using it as texture.
