Biography

Life

Anand Bhate was born on 29 April 1971. He began learning music with Chandrashekhar Deshpande, continued with Yashwantbua Marathe, and then studied with Pandit Bhimsen Joshi for fifteen years, in the Kirana gharana tradition.

Alongside full khayal recitals he sings natyageet, thumri, bhajan and abhang, and it was this range that led to his work on the 2011 Marathi film Balgandharva, for which he received the National Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer. He performs regularly at festivals in Maharashtra and elsewhere, including the Sawai Gandharva Bhimsen Mahotsav in Pune, the festival his guru built.

Musical contribution

What they brought to music

He works in the Kirana manner he learned from Bhimsen Joshi — long, patient raga exposition and an open-throated line — and carries the same voice into the Marathi natyasangeet and abhang repertoire.
