Biography
Life
Swapan Chaudhuri was born on 30 March 1945. His father was a doctor who composed, his mother sang; the family was musical without being professional. He is a maternal nephew of the Kolkata tabla maestro Pandit Shankar Ghosh. Sources do not state his birthplace outright, though his upbringing, education and family ties are all in Kolkata.
He sang before he drummed, beginning tabla at about five, and trained intensively under Pandit Santosh Krishna Biswas, a family friend and an eminent exponent of the Lucknow gharana. He also took two master's degrees at Jadavpur University, in economics and in music, and played cricket for the university until an injury prompted his father to tell him to choose between cricket, which has a time limit, and tabla, which does not.
The turn came in 1969. At twenty-four he played a full tabla solo at Ustad Ali Akbar Khan's Kolkata home at Khan's request; Khan engaged him for a concert, and other leading musicians followed. The relationship lasted a lifetime, and Chaudhuri has described it as father and son.
In 1981 he moved his teaching base to the United States as Director of Percussion at the Ali Akbar College of Music in San Rafael, California, and at its branch in Basel. From 1991 he has also directed North Indian percussion studies at the California Institute of the Arts. He has played Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, the Queen Elizabeth Hall and the United Nations.
He received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1996, the Padma Shri in 2019, and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship announced in late 2022. He lives in San Rafael; his son Nilan is a tabla soloist.
His recorded work with Ustad Ali Akbar Khan and Asha Bhosle on Legacy (1997) and Passing on the Tradition (1998) was nominated for Grammy Awards.
Musical contribution
What they brought to music
Chaudhuri's playing is Lucknow gharana by training and unmistakably his own in practice — clear, elegant, fast when it needs to be, and precise in tone. He grew up hearing Ahmed Jan Thirakwa, Anokhelal Mishra and Samta Prasad, each of them, as he points out, sounding like nobody else; his guru's instruction was to follow him, not imitate him. The long association with Ali Akbar Khan pushed him further toward a melodic sense of rhythm — visualising a tala's divisions as having colour and character rather than counting them — which he considers the basis of good accompaniment.
His largest contribution may be institutional. Since 1981 at the Ali Akbar College of Music and since 1991 at CalArts, he has trained generations of students, Indian and Western, several of whom now teach in universities or run their own schools. He has composed for tabla and world-percussion ensembles since the mid-1970s and worked across genres with musicians including L. Shankar, Larry Coryell and Kayhan Kalhor.
