Biography

Life

Santosh Sant was born into a family of musicians in Gwalior. His first training in Hindustani music came from his father, the Gwalior gharana vocalist Vasantrao Sant, and he then studied with the Gwalior sitar player Shriram Umedkar (also written Umdekar). He later moved to Mumbai to learn the bansuri from Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia, and is described as one of his senior disciples; he accompanies his guru in concert.

Alongside performing, he is founder-director of Swaravenu Gurukul, a school devoted to bamboo flute teaching in the guru-shishya tradition. He performs widely in India, including concert series such as Pancham Nishad's Pratahswar morning raga series in Mumbai and temple and academy programmes elsewhere, and a thematic flute album, Essence, was issued by Saregama in 2013.

Musical contribution

What they brought to music

His playing is grounded in a vocal upbringing in the Gwalior gharana before the flute, and in the concert approach he took from Hariprasad Chaurasia.
