Biography

Life

Shubha Mudgal was born Shubha Gupta in Prayagraj on 23 June 1959, into an academic household: both her parents, Skand and Jaya Gupta, taught English literature at Allahabad University and both were deeply attached to Hindustani music and the arts. Music and dance lessons were arranged for her and her sister as children.

Her training passed through several teachers rather than a single household. She studied with Pandit Vinay Chandra Maudgalya, an accomplished composer and lyricist as well as a musician, and in Delhi continued with Pandit Vasant Thakar and with singers including Pandit Jitendra Abhisheki, Naina Devi and Pandit Kumar Gandharva. Her core repertoire is khayal, thumri and dadra.

She began performing as a Hindustani classical singer in the 1980s. From the 1990s she also worked in popular and fusion forms, and in playback singing, including Tamil film songs, a choice she has defended plainly: khayal and thumri remain her favourites, she has said, but that is no reason to curtail other musical urges. Her albums include Ali More Angana (1996), Classically Yours (1999), Kisson Ki Chadar (2003) and No Stranger Here (2012).

She received the National Film Award for Best Non-Feature Film Music Direction in 1995 for Amrit Beej, a Gold Plaque at the Chicago International Film Festival in 1998 for her music in Dance of the Wind, and the Padma Shri in 2000. In 2025 Techno India University, West Bengal conferred an honorary doctorate on her.

She was married to the jurist Mukul Mudgal, son of her guru Vinay Chandra Maudgalya; the marriage ended. Their son Dhaval Mudgal is a musician. She later married the tabla player Aneesh Pradhan, with whom she has long worked.
