Biography

Life

Suchismita Chatterjee was born in Allahabad into a musical household. Her parents, Robin and Krishna Chatterjee, were Hindustani vocalists; they taught their daughters vocal music first and encouraged them towards the flute. The family lived in Afghanistan for a time because of her father's work.

After returning to India she began flute training under Pandit Bholanath Prasanna in Allahabad, and in her teens took up study with Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia. A Nuffic scholarship took her to the Rotterdam Conservatory, where she completed world-music certifications as performing musician and music teacher with distinction in 1998. At Prayag Sangeet Samiti in Allahabad she completed the Sangeet Prabhakar in 2001, taking the gold performance medal for flute, and the Sangeet Pravin in 2005 with the silver.

She and her sister made their Bombay debut in 1995 at the Sampoorna Yugal Sangeet Ratri conference, and have since performed across India and abroad, including on stage with their guru. They have also worked with organisations that bring interactive classical-music presentations to students. She lives in Pune.
