Biography

Life

Umakant Gundecha was born and raised in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, in a family without professional musicians. In an interview given in 2026 he described singing bhajans in temples with his brother as children, and a father who valued literature, music and painting and who enrolled the brothers in a music college, where both completed postgraduate study in music and were exposed to khayal, dhrupad, thumri and tappa.

Unable to afford training in Mumbai or Delhi, the brothers applied to the Dhrupad Kendra newly opened by the Government of Madhya Pradesh in Bhopal, which offered a four-year scholarship and taught in the guru-shishya manner without fixed syllabus or examinations. They asked to be auditioned singing together, were selected, and moved to Bhopal in 1981 to study under Ustad Zia Fariduddin Dagar, with training also from his brother Ustad Zia Mohiuddin Dagar.

After four years of study the brothers gave their first public performance in May 1985 at the Uttaradhikar dance and music festival in Bhopal. Press accounts note that the duo built a career in dhrupad without a hereditary gharana behind them. They recorded for labels including His Master's Voice, Music Today, Navras and Audio Rec London, and performed widely in Europe, North America, Australia and Asia.

The brothers later founded the Dhrupad Sansthan in Bhopal, a residential school modelled on the guru-shishya training they had themselves received; Umakant has said students from around thirty countries have been associated with it. He was awarded the Padma Shri, jointly with Ramakant, in 2012. Members of the family have continued in the music: his brother Akhilesh Gundecha is a pakhawaj player, his nephew Anant Gundecha now performs with him, and his daughter Dhani Gundecha studies vocal music.

Musical contribution

What they brought to music

The Gundecha duet style is rooted in Dagar vani dhrupad, with a slow unmetered alap in two voices before composed material set to pakhawaj. The brothers expanded the sung repertoire beyond traditional texts, setting verse by Hindi poets including Tulsidas, Padmakar and Nirala.
