Biography
Life
Shamsuddin Khan, called Bhurji, was born in 1890 at Bundi, the youngest of Alladiya Khan's three sons. His father thought his voice the best of the brothers and considered him the most capable of his children.
In his late youth he fell seriously ill with influenza while at Uniara. Repeated nose-bleeds and the treatment he received in the village left him with lasting weakness and memory loss, and his voice never fully recovered. His father set his training aside for a time, and he continued instead with his uncle Haider Khan. Teaching restored what illness had taken: as he began instructing students his memory steadied, his singing improved, and his father resumed his training.
After the death of Manji Khan in 1937, Bhurji Khan took on the task of passing the gayaki forward, and it is largely through his teaching that the Jaipur-Atrauli style spread beyond the family. He died in Bombay in 1950 after a prolonged illness.
Musical contribution
What they brought to music
He concentrated on teaching rather than on a performing career, and set out the gayaki of his father to students who went on to become its best-known exponents. Many of his students had also learned from Alladiya Khan or from Manji Khan.
