Biography

Life

Prateek Chaudhuri was born in Delhi in 1971, the son of the sitarist Pandit Debu Chaudhuri. He trained first with his father and also, in the traditional manner, with his father's guru Ustad Mushtaq Ali Khan, placing him in the Senia line his family represented.

He was graded a Top Class artist by All India Radio and national television, taught as a professor in the Faculty of Music at the University of Delhi, and recorded for Saregama both alone and in duet with his father. Alongside classical recitals he developed ensemble and crossover projects, among them "Sitar Ecstasy", "Sitars of India" and "Soul of India". He also co-wrote books on Indian music and on plucked instruments of northern India.

He died of Covid-19 in Delhi on 6 May 2021, five days after his father's death from a Covid-related illness.

Musical contribution

What they brought to music

Chaudhuri's classical playing followed the clear, unhurried Senia manner taught in his family, while his ensemble work placed the sitar alongside other instruments in arranged settings — two strands he kept distinct in performance rather than blending into a single style.
