Biography

Life

Rupak Kulkarni grew up in a musical household: his father, Pandit Malhar Rao Kulkarni, gave him his first grounding. He continued his learning under Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia, and his playing is described as representing the Maihar gharana.

He has appeared at many of the principal Hindustani festivals, among them the Tansen Samaroh, the Sawai Gandharva Bhimsen Festival, the Harballabh Sangeet Sammelan, the Vishnu Digambar Paluskar Samaroh, Saptak in Ahmedabad and the Gunidas Sammelan. His concerts have been broadcast on All India Radio and on television.

His recorded work began early: his first album, Tenderly, was released when he was eighteen, with Anindo Chatterjee on tabla. Later releases include Nature's Treasure (2016) and Trivenu (2017), issued across labels such as Times Music, His Master's Voice, Navras and Sense World Music.
