Biography

Life

Satyajit Talwalkar began learning tabla at the age of four from his father, Pandit Suresh Talwalkar, and the Darbar Festival's profile states that his playing "stands true to the training he received" from him. That profile describes a sound built on deep bass modulation from the bayan against fast, light work on the dayan, with solo playing that keeps melody audible inside the rhythm.

He has received the Sangeet Natak Akademi's Bharat Ratna Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar, the academy's award for younger musicians.

He performs both as a soloist and as an accompanist. He has appeared repeatedly at the Darbar Festival in Britain, including a February 2025 duo concert with the sitarist Niladri Kumar, and his solo recitals are documented at events around his father's gurukul circle in Maharashtra.

Musical contribution

What they brought to music

Solo tabla in his father's manner: composed material — kaidas, relas and tukras — laid out with an audible melodic sense, and accompaniment shaped around the soloist rather than competing with them.
