Taalyogi Aashram
The residential percussion gurukul in Dhayari, Pune, where Pandit Suresh Talwalkar teaches.
What it is
Taalyogi Aashram is a residential teaching household rather than a college: a small number of students live in one building in Dhayari, outside Pune, and take daily taleem from Pandit Suresh Talwalkar. It is a gurukul around one teacher, not a gharana — Talwalkar's own tabla draws on the Delhi, Ajrada, Farrukhabad, Benares and Lucknow lines together with the Carnatic theory of laya he studied with the mridangam player Ramnad Ishwaran, and the title Taalyogi was conferred on him by the Shankaracharya of the Karaveer peeth. He received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2004 and the Padma Shri in 2013.
What it does
Students live at the aashram and learn tabla and pakhawaj directly from Pandit Suresh Talwalkar; he also teaches a few percussionists who play other instruments, the site naming djembe and calabash among them. He spends four to five hours there each morning and again each evening, working on laya and taal, and students practise for much of the remaining day. They also look after the building themselves.
One strand of his teaching is audible in what the aashram is for: he took the unusual step of accompanying tabla solo with sung composition rather than the customary sarangi or harmonium nagma, which lets the cycle be followed by ear through the words, and which makes the taal, not the drum, the thing being taught.
History and place
The aashram is in Dhayari, a suburb about ten kilometres from Pune; the published address is 148 Sitaee Nagar, Dhayari, Pune 411041, and the trust is registered as E-6092. Its own site says one of Talwalkar's senior students, Dr. Srinivas (Shri) Rao, made his three-storey bungalow available for the gurukul, and that another senior student, Mandar Joshi, who lives nearby, keeps discipline among the resident students. Two pages on the site differ on numbers — one says "some forty odd students", another "some twenty-odd", with living space for around thirty — so the exact figure is unsettled; the students are described as roughly fifteen to twenty-five years old. The initial cost of renovating the bungalow and equipping it for resident students was met by the Pt. Firoz Dastur Memorial Foundation and individual donors, and the aashram trust now asks for donations towards running costs. Public contact as published: +91 96650 61817, +91 91466 00437.
The site gives no founding year, and the archive does not invent one; what it does record is a Tapapurti Sohala — a completion of twelve years — held at the Balgandharva Rangmandir in Pune on 4 April 2023, with tributes written for the occasion by Pandit Ulhas Kashalkar, Pandit Ramdas Palsule and Sonia Parchure. That places the beginning of the gurukul around 2011, which is as close as the published record allows. Checked September 2026: the official site is live and carries a 2023 copyright line.
