Biography

Life

Shahid Parvez Khan was born into the Etawah gharana, also known as the Imdadkhani gharana, one of the most influential instrumental lineages in Hindustani music. He belongs to the seventh generation of musicians in his family and was trained from early childhood by his father, Ustad Aziz Khan, himself a sitar player of the same lineage.

He began performing in public as a young musician and has since appeared at major festivals in India and abroad, and taught extensively — through institutional teaching and through a large circle of private students who continue the gharana's approach.

Note on sources: Khan's birth year is given as 1954 in the body of his Wikipedia entry, while some indexing there records 1958. The date above follows the explicitly stated figure; the discrepancy is noted here rather than resolved.

Musical contribution

What they brought to music

The Etawah gharana is closely associated with the gayaki ang — the practice of making an instrument approach the phrasing, ornament and breath of the singing voice. Shahid Parvez's playing is often described in these terms: long, sustained meend drawn across the frets, a slow and deliberate alap, and a rhythmic sense shaped by close attention to the tabla.

Further detailed notes on his repertoire and technique will be added here as they can be properly sourced.
